A rare close encounter with this guy before the snow came in. I had about 20 seconds where we locked eyes before he flew off. A visceral experience as if we were speaking a quiet yet powerful language.
I spent almost all of the day chasing UP Big Boy 4014 (the largest steam engine in the world). Let's just say I'm thankful for my truck and winter tires after 2 + feet of snow on the ground. I had planned on catching it just out of Denver, but when it was delayed, I couldn't find it heading, so I headed north and finally caught it north of Greeley near Eaton.
Merely a minute or two watching and feeling the earth shake as this hunk of 1.2 million pounds sped by made it all worth it. What an incredible scene out there with the snow and this old train that has been brought back to life. Capturing the photos let me go back and truly appreciate the details and what an incredible machine and slice of history this is.
This tree on Lookout Mountain has captured my imagination for years now. I've always waited for the right time to capture a photo of it that would do it justice. On 12-29-30, under a beautiful sunset, the tree showed off its true glory. The clouds wrapped around the branches like a blanket.
